Montparnasse, Paris

Montparnasse is one of the large transportation hubs of the city where besides the train station you'll find many subway lines and buses that connect the neighborhood with the entire city. Around the station are a number of streets where the oldest theaters of the city still attract large crowds. The Montparnasse skyscraper, perhaps the least attractive in the city, is a must-see for the view. Entrance is 8.50 and the viewing platform is open everyday. The neighborhood got its name in the 18th century when students would read poems near a long gone hill called Parnaso created from excavations of the nearby catacombs. In the beginning of the 19th century it was the refuge of choice for political dissenters from Modigliano to Lenin! The cemetery near the tower is worth a visit and the final resting place of such luminaries as Sartre, Boudelaire, and Beauvoir.
