The Pompidou Centre

The Pompidou Centre is situated in the centre of Paris, made of stainless steel with tubes, which fit together, the colours of the tubes are different depending on their purpose, red, blue, yellow and green. Air passes through the blue tubes, liquid in the green, in yellow electrical cables and the red tubes are used for means of communication.

The centre takes its name from the President George Pompidou. It was opened to the public in 1977 by the president Valery Giscard d'Estaing and was closed in 1997 for refurbishing. This job was assigned to the Italian architect Rienzo Piano who made the internal spaces larger. The space was reopened in 2000. The Pompidou Centre is also called Beubourg, the contemporary galleries can be found on the ground floor and on the third and fourth floors the most vast modern art collections in the world. Works by artists such as Kandinsky, Mirò, Matisse and Picasso can be seen, to name a few. A library and a musical institute with its own concert room, are also part of the centre.

Externally, on the square, a bizarre fountain called Stravinskij, can be found. This fountain represents the music with objects and figures inside, which move and spray water. The Pompidou centre is found in the Marais neighbourhood where you can stay in typical B&B Marais at a great price.

Opening hours: Open everyday bar Tuesday and 1st May: from 11.00 to 21.00: last entry at 20.00; tickets: from 13 or 11€ (depending on the time of year), from 10 or 9€ (reduced price, depending on the time of year).
