The idea to build what has been ironically dubbed the "wedding cake" was initiated as revenge by the Catholic church against the Paris Commune. The basilica was erected on the top of Montmartre precisely where the revolutionary movement of the Commune began and construction lasted from 1875 until 1914! The Byzantine style isn't loved by everyone, but it remains a fascinating if not discrete building. The white stone used to construct the Sacré-Coeur is called Château-Landon and has been lightened from the sun and rain. The inside of the church is less interesting but the cupola with its 300 steep steps is worth paying 5 to visit. The neighborhood around the Sacré-Coeur is a maze of narrow streets full of small shops, bars, and bistros. Reserve your Sacré-Couer B&B in Paris and experience the city like a native!
